Instead of a typical tree shape, these mossy cones stand tall like sculpted art pieces.
Adorned with pinecones, acorns, and clusters of red baubles, they look almost enchanted, like they belong in a winter fairy tale.
Their slender height and natural textures make them an eye-catching addition to modern or traditional holiday displays alike.
Materials Needed
- 2 tall cone-shaped forms (foam or cardboard, 24-36” height)
- Fresh sheet moss (enough to cover both forms)
- Floral pins or hot glue gun
- Pinecones (12-15 assorted sizes)
- Red berries (artificial or dried clusters, 10-12 sprigs)
- Small ornaments in red and burgundy (20-25)
- Acorns or small nuts
- 2 decorative planters (medium-sized)
- Twisted branches
- Potting soil or floral foam
Step-by-step Guide
Step 1: Place your twisted branches or stems into the planters, securing them firmly with floral foam or soil so they won’t tip. These will act as the tree trunks.
Step 2: Prepare the cone forms by covering them with sheet moss. Use floral pins or hot glue to attach the moss tightly, making sure the entire surface is evenly covered.
Step 3: Attach the moss cones to the top of the twisted branches, fixing them securely so they sit upright.
You can also adjust until they look balanced.
Step 4: Begin decorating the moss cones by tucking in pinecones and acorns first. Then place them randomly but spread evenly so the texture feels natural.
Step 5: Add red berry clusters and ornaments, concentrating them toward the middle and bottom areas for a fuller effect.
Let a few ornaments peek out near the top for balance.
Step 6: Step back and adjust spacing. If desired, add fairy lights for a warm glow at night.
Note:
For outdoor displays, mist the moss lightly to keep it fresh longer, or choose preserved moss if you prefer low maintenance.
