How to Transform an Old Milk Can into a Glowing Holiday PlanterImagine an antique milk can, once used on early winter mornings at the farm, now standing tall as a festive centerpiece.

It’s brimming with pine boughs, eucalyptus, and tiny ornaments, while a cage of fairy lights glows like fireflies dancing on a December night.

This planter is not just decoration, it’s a story of tradition meeting creativity.

Materials Needed

  • 1 vintage milk can (about 24-30” tall)
  • Fresh greenery (pine, cedar, eucalyptus – 15-20 stems)
  • 1 wire garden globe or tomato cage
  • 1 string of warm white fairy lights (50-100 bulbs)
  • Ornaments or small holiday figurines (like an angel or star)
  • Floral foam or sand to anchor stems inside the can

Step-by-step Guide

Step 1: Place floral foam or sand inside the milk can to create a stable base for your greenery.

Step 2: Insert the wire globe or tomato cage into the can, ensuring it sits firmly.

Then wrap the fairy lights evenly around the structure, leaving the plug end accessible.

Step 3: Arrange the greenery around the inside edge of the can, letting pine boughs cascade over the rim for a natural draping effect.

You can also mix textures with eucalyptus and spruce for variety.

Step 4: Add decorative accents like pinecones, berries, or a small angel tucked inside the arrangement for a personal touch.

Step 5: Turn on the lights and adjust the branches so they peek through the glow, creating a warm halo effect.

Note:

This planter looks stunning both indoors and outdoors.

If using outside, secure the lights and greenery with floral wire to withstand winter winds.
