How to Make a Nativity Wreath That Shares the True Meaning of ChristmasLook at this nativity wreath! It tells a timeless story including Mary and Joseph watching over the baby, surrounded by evergreens that symbolize eternal life.

The hand-painted wooden figures, wrapped in plaid scarves, have a homespun charm that feels both humble and sacred.

Adding pinecones dusted with snow and a star declaring “The Greatest Gift” completes the display.

You can place this at your entryway, and it quietly shares the message of Christmas with every neighbor, guest, or passerby.

Materials Needed

  • 1 large grapevine or evergreen wreath base (24-30” diameter)
  • Wooden cutouts for Mary, Joseph, and baby Jesus
  • Acrylic paint set (green, red, brown, beige, gold)
  • Scrap fabric (red or plaid scarves, 12”×12” pieces)
  • 1 wooden star cutout (10-12” wide)
  • Black paint marker or stencil (“The Greatest Gift”)
  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks
  • 3-4 pinecones (natural or snow-frosted)
  • Artificial evergreen picks

Step-by-step Guide

Step 1: Place your wreath on a flat surface and fluff out the greenery. Then add extra evergreen picks if you want a fuller look.

Step 2: Paint your wooden star gold, then write or stencil “The Greatest Gift” in black. Let it dry completely.

Step 3: Paint the wooden cutouts for Mary, Joseph, and baby Jesus using warm earthy tones.

Once dry, glue fabric scraps onto the figures as scarves and shawls.

Step 4: Attach the star and nativity cutouts to the wreath using hot glue or small nails, arranging them so the star sits to the left and the figures nestle to the right.

Step 5: Finish by hot gluing pinecones around the bottom and weaving extra greenery for balance.

Now you can hang your nativity wreath on a door or wall where it can be seen and appreciated.
