DIY Scarecrow Jar Lanterns to Brighten Thanksgiving Nights

Imagine a row of little scarecrows keeping watch over your table, their glowing smiles lighting up the evening.

Each jar is like a character including straw hair sticking out, hats tipped just so, and bright plaid bows tied around their necks.

They don’t just decorate the space; they bring a sense of whimsy and fun to the holiday, almost like they’re part of the celebration.

Materials Needed

  • 3 clear glass jars (10-12” tall, wide opening)
  • 1 bag of raffia or straw filler (about 100g)
  • 1 set of warm white LED fairy lights (battery-operated, 20-30 bulbs each)
  • Small piece of burlap (12”×12” per jar)
  • Artificial flowers (2-3 per jar, fall-colored)
  • Orange felt (for nose, cut into 2” triangles)
  • Black acrylic paint or paint pen
  • Plaid ribbon (12” long per jar, 1.5” wide)
  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks
  • Scissors

Step-by-step Guide

Step 1: Clean the jars, then fill each one with raffia, leaving enough space for fairy lights.

Step 2: Insert a strand of fairy lights into each jar, weaving them through the raffia so the glow spreads evenly.

Step 3: Use orange felt to cut small triangle noses, then glue them to the outside center of each jar.

Step 4: Paint large oval eyes and a stitched smile with black paint or a paint pen. Let dry completely.

Step 5: Tie a plaid ribbon into a bow and glue it at the bottom of the jar for a scarecrow bow tie.

Step 6: Cut burlap squares and place them loosely over the jar tops like floppy hats. Then glue an artificial flower on each for extra charm.

Notes:

You can use solar-powered lights if you plan to place these outside. For a more whimsical touch, paint each scarecrow face a little differently so no two jars look the same.
