How to Make Popsicle Stick Scarecrows for Thanksgiving

Imagine sitting down with your kids on a cool autumn afternoon, paintbrushes in hand, and watching their imaginations run wild as they design their own scarecrow friends.

Popsicle sticks become little bodies, scraps of fabric turn into shirts, and raffia transforms into wild, straw-like hair.

Each scarecrow ends up with its own quirky charm, just like the people who made them.

These popsicle stick scarecrows don’t just make decorations, they create memories you’ll treasure long after the season ends.

Materials Needed

  • 8-10 popsicle sticks per scarecrow (4.5” long standard size)
  • Acrylic paint set (fall colors: orange, brown, blue, red, green)
  • Hot glue gun or craft glue
  • Scrap fabric pieces (for scarves or shirts, 2”×3” each)
  • Raffia or yellow yarn (6-8” strands)
  • Googly eyes or black marker for eyes
  • Scissors

Step-by-step Guide

Step 1: Line up 6-7 popsicle sticks vertically and glue them together to form the scarecrow’s body. Then add a horizontal stick across the top for the hat brim.

Step 2: Paint the sticks with bright fall colors. Let each section dry before adding details like patches or plaid shirts.

Step 3: Cut raffia or yarn into small strands and glue them behind the hat brim for straw-like hair.

Step 4: Glue on fabric scraps as scarves or shirts. You can also add googly eyes or draw a friendly face with a marker.

Step 5: Once dry, display them as stand-alone decorations, glue magnets on the back, or string them up as a fall garland.

Notes:

For extra fun, let kids give each scarecrow a name and personality, it turns the project into a playful storytelling activity, too.
