How to Transform a Plain Stool into a Rainbow Pom-Pom SeatAmazingly, this is a piece of functional art. Each pom-pom feels like a pixel of color, stitched together to create a vibrant mosaic.

When you walk past it, you can’t help but smile. It invites you to sit, to play, or to simply admire how something so simple can become so alive with imagination.

It’s a reminder that furniture doesn’t always have to be serious, it can be joyful too.

Materials Needed

  • 1 wooden stool (12-16” seat diameter recommended)
  • 200-250 medium-sized felt pom-poms (2-3 cm, assorted rainbow colors)
  • Upholstery needle and heavy-duty thread (or fishing line)
  • Thick fabric base (canvas or upholstery cloth)
  • Hot glue gun (optional)
  • Scissors

Step-by-step Guide

Step 1: Remove the stool’s cushion (if it has one). If the top is plain wood, cut a round piece of fabric to fit snugly over the seat.

Step 2: Thread your upholstery needle and begin stitching pom-poms directly onto the fabric base.

You should ork in rows or spirals depending on the look you want. Make sure each pom-pom is secured tightly so it won’t loosen with use.

Step 3: Continue filling the entire surface until no gaps remain.

Then use a mix of bright colors to create a rainbow effect, or go for ombré shades if you prefer a gradient look.

Step 4: Once the fabric is fully covered, stretch it over the stool’s seat and staple or sew it tightly underneath.

For wooden tops, you can glue the fabric directly for extra grip.

Step 5: Sit back and admire your new stool, it’s bold, soft, and guaranteed to steal attention in any room.

Tips & Tricks:

If you’re making this for a child’s space, consider using larger pom-poms, they stay secure longer and are easier to clean.

For an adult version, smaller pom-poms give a more polished mosaic effect.
