A snail carries its home wherever it goes, reminding us that comfort and belonging can be found within.
Stitching this plush is like weaving that philosophy into fabric. The soft body, gentle blush, and spiral shell create more than a toy, it becomes a cozy companion.
With a tiny bow perched on its head, your handmade snail will feel like a whimsical friend slowly wandering into your home.
Materials Needed
- ½ yard of light-colored fabric (linen or cotton for the body, 20”×15” piece)
- ¼ yard soft fabric in a contrasting color (velvet, fleece, or corduroy for the shell, 15”×15” square)
- Small scrap of fabric
- Black embroidery thread
- Pink embroidery thread or blush fabric paint (for cheeks)
- Polyester stuffing (around 200-250 g)
- Fabric scissors and pins
- Sewing machine or hand sewing needle
- Paper and pencil
Step-by-step Guide
Step 1: Sketch a simple snail outline on paper, a long, curved body with a rounded top for the head.
Then cut the shape out and use it as a template to cut two fabric pieces for the body.
Step 2: Pin the body pieces together with right sides facing, then sew along the edge, leaving the bottom open.
You can turn it right side out and stuff firmly until it holds its shape. Next, close the opening with a ladder stitch.
Step 3: For the shell, cut a long strip of fabric about 4” wide and 20” long.
Then fold it lengthwise with right sides facing, sew the edge, and turn it into a tube. Stuff lightly so it stays flexible.
Step 4: Roll the stuffed fabric strip into a spiral, stitching it in place as you go. Attach it securely to the snail’s back with invisible stitches.
Step 5: Embroider sleepy eyes, a smile, and blush cheeks onto the face. Then, add a small bow to one antenna for extra charm.
Tips:
You can play with textures, use velvet for a luxurious shell or corduroy for a cozy rustic look.
When I stitched my own, I found that keeping the shell lightly stuffed helped it curl naturally without looking bulky.
