Think of these blocks as tiny canvases. Each side tells a story so you can stitch patterns, add little tags for babies to tug on, or mix bold colors that spark imagination.
Materials Needed
- 6 fabric squares – 6”×6” each (cotton or soft flannel)
- Polyester stuffing or foam cubes
- Optional: ribbon or textured fabric strips
- Sewing machine & matching thread
- Fabric scissors & pins
- Paper cube pattern (optional)
Step-by-step Guide
Step 1: Cut six equal squares from your fabric. You should choose contrasting patterns for a fun patchwork effect.
Step 2: Arrange the squares in a cross shape. Then pin them together and sew along the edges, right sides facing, until you have a cube with one side open.
Step 3: If you want sensory tags, fold small ribbon strips in half and sew them into the seams before closing the block. Babies love exploring textures.
Step 4: Turn the cube right side out. Stuff firmly with polyester filling or insert a pre-cut foam cube.
Step 5: Hand-stitch the final opening neatly, keeping the edges tight.
Tips:
I like adding one side in a different fabric texture, like corduroy or fleece, so kids experience new tactile sensations.
You can also use fabric paint to add letters, numbers, or animals to encourage early learning.
