How to Sew a Patchwork Heart Pillow With Vintage Charm

Every heart on this pillow feels like a keepsake, cut from fabric that once belonged to something else. Together, they create a tapestry of affection, like a patchwork diary written in fabric instead of ink.

Specially, the muted floral patterns and faded pinks breathe romance into a room without being too sweet.

It’s the kind of pillow that invites you to sit, lean back, and maybe remember the people who stitched love into everyday things long before you.

Materials Needed

  • 1 plain pillow cover (18”×18” recommended, in neutral linen or cotton)
  • Assorted fabric scraps (floral, plaid, and quilted prints, about 6”×6” each)
  • Pinking shears
  • Embroidery thread (neutral tones)
  • Scissors and pins
  • Sewing machine or hand needle
  • 1 pillow insert

Step-by-step Guide

Step 1: Cut out heart shapes from your fabric scraps, making each one a little different in size and pattern for variety.

Step 2: Use pinking shears to trim edges, which will keep them from unraveling too much while adding a charmingly rustic finish.

Step 3: Arrange the hearts randomly across the front of your pillow cover until the layout feels balanced. Pin in place.

Step 4: Stitch around each heart using a simple running stitch or zigzag stitch. Don’t worry about precision as slightly uneven lines add to the vintage appeal.

Step 5: Finally, insert the pillow form, fluff it up, and admire your patchwork design.

Tips:

I loved using scraps from an old quilt for mine as it felt like giving new life to something worn but still beautiful.

If you want a softer look, wash the pillow cover after sewing; the hearts will fray just a bit more, adding texture and depth.
