Perfect for centerpieces, mantel displays, or even as a seasonal accent, this vase proves that décor doesn’t need to be complicated to feel special.
Materials Needed
- 1 cylindrical vase or wide glass jar (7″-10″ tall)
- 10-14 wood shims (8″ long, trimmed if needed)
- White chalk paint or spray paint
- Gray or brown stain
- Sandpaper (150-220 grit)
- Hot glue gun or industrial adhesive
- Twine or jute rope (24-36″ length)
Step-by-step Guide
Step 1: Paint the vase base with white chalk paint and let it dry completely. This bright backdrop will make the wood stand out beautifully.
Step 2: Stain the wood shims in your chosen shade of gray or brown. Wipe lightly with a rag so the wood grain shows through, then sand edges for a distressed finish.
Step 3: Arrange the shims vertically around the vase, overlapping slightly if needed. You should test-fit before gluing to ensure even spacing.
Step 4: Once satisfied, glue the shims in place one by one. Then hold each for a few seconds to ensure a strong bond.
Step 5: Tie jute twine around the middle and finish with a casual knot or bow to add that farmhouse touch.
Tip:
I like to leave some natural imperfections on the shims as little cracks or knots in the wood give the vase more personality.
You could also switch the twine for a satin ribbon during holidays to give it a fresh seasonal look.
