How to Make An Embroidery Hoop Photo Art for Beginners

This project is a beautiful way to blend modern memories with a timeless craft. Instead of hiding photos in albums or digital folders, you can display them in embroidery hoops for a creative, rustic finish.

They make perfect gifts for Mother’s Day, anniversaries, or birthdays, especially when you choose meaningful pictures.

You can even create a wall collage of moments that tell a story whether it’s a child growing up, travels, or family celebrations.

Materials Needed

  • Embroidery hoops (size depending on your photo)
  • Printed fabric photos
  • Scissors
  • Iron (if using transfer paper)
  • Optional: ribbons, lace, or embroidery thread

Step-by-step Guide

Step 1: Choose your favorite photos. Make sure they’re bright and high-quality, since details look softer on fabric.

Step 2: Print your photos onto fabric.

You can use printable fabric sheets that go into your home printer, or transfer paper (print the photo on the transfer sheet and iron it onto cotton fabric). Many online services also print photos directly onto fabric for you.

Step 3: Place the fabric photo inside the embroidery hoop, centering it so the main subject is framed beautifully. Then tighten the hoop to hold the fabric in place.

Step 4: Trim the excess fabric from the back, leaving about half an inch. You can either glue this down or leave it tucked.

Step 5: (Optional) Add decorations like ribbon bows at the top, a lace trim around the hoop, or simple embroidery stitches around the edges to highlight the picture.

Step 6: Hang your photo hoop on the wall or gift it to someone special. A set of three or more creates a wonderful storytelling effect.

Tips: For a rustic touch, you can use black-and-white or sepia-toned photos. For a playful style, print children’s pictures in bright colors and add embroidered stars, flowers, or little words around them.
