Materials

  • Assorted pasta shapes (about 64 pieces: rigatoni, fusilli, penne, shells)
  • Thick cardboard or wood board (12x12 inches)
  • Acrylic paint (2–3 colors, 50ml each)
  • Paintbrushes (1 small, 1 medium)
  • Hot glue gun or strong craft glue
  • Ruler and pencil for marking the grid

Instructions

  • Cut your cardboard or wood board to a 12x12-inch square. Then use a ruler to draw an 8x8 grid for your chessboard, then paint alternating squares in two colors. Let it dry completely.
  • Sort pasta shapes for each chess piece type, you can choose larger shapes for kings and queens, smaller ones for pawns.
  • Glue the pasta pieces together creatively to form unique shapes for each type of chess piece. Let them dry for 30 minutes.
  • Paint half of the pieces in one color and the other half in a contrasting shade. Apply two coats for smooth coverage.
  • Once dry, arrange your custom pasta pieces on the board and enjoy a handmade, colorful chess match that’s as fun to look at as it is to play.
