Materials

  • 2 white coffee filters (size 8–12 cup)
  • Washable markers or watercolor paint
  • Spray bottle filled with water
  • 1 plastic spoon (any color, about 6 inches)
  • 1 pipe cleaner (for antennae, cut to 5–6 inches)
  • Small googly eyes (2 per butterfly)
  • Glue or hot glue gun
  • Rubber band or twist tie

Instructions

  • Flatten the coffee filters and decorate them using markers or watercolors in bright, bold shades. Lightly spray with water to let the colors blend, then let them dry.
  • Once dry, pinch each filter in the center to form two sets of wings. Secure both together in the middle using a rubber band or twist tie.
  • Attach the wings to the handle part of your spoon, wrapping the band snugly around the base. The spoon’s head will serve as the butterfly’s face.
  • Glue on googly eyes and twist a pipe cleaner around the top of the spoon to form cute little antennae.
  • Adjust the wings until they look full and symmetrical, then let your butterfly dry.
