Materials

  • 6–8 white coffee filters (size 8–12 cup)
  • Washable paints in red, orange, yellow, and brown
  • Paintbrush or sponge
  • Black construction paper (for tree trunks)
  • Scissors
  • Glue stick or craft glue
  • Scrap paper or newspaper to protect your table

Instructions

  • Flatten your coffee filters and place them on a protected surface. Then use red, yellow, and orange paint to cover each one in swirls and dabs, don’t overthink it, just let the colors blend naturally.
  • Let the filters dry completely. The paint will soften and spread as it dries, creating that beautiful, leafy effect.
  • While they dry, cut out tree trunk shapes from black paper, wide at the bottom and branching toward the top.
  • Once the filters are dry, glue a trunk shape in the center of each painted circle. Adjust it so the branches stretch into the leaves.
  • Hang your finished trees on a wall or window. Together, they make a warm, cheerful fall display that feels just like walking through an autumn park.
