Materials

  • 5–6 white coffee filters (size 8–12 cup)
  • Washable markers or watercolor paint in assorted bright colors
  • Spray bottle filled with water
  • Scissors
  • Colored construction paper (for beaks and wings)
  • Glue stick or craft glue
  • Optional: white cardstock or frame for displaying

Instructions

  • Flatten your coffee filters and color them using watercolor paints or markers. Try blending colors like turquoise, purple, yellow, and red for a bold effect.
  • Lightly mist the filters with water to help the colors flow together, then let them dry completely.
  • Once dry, cut the filters into semicircle shapes for bird bodies. You can get about two birds per filter.
  • Cut small triangles from colored paper for beaks and half-moon shapes for wings.
  • Glue the wings and beaks onto each semicircle, layering pieces to give every bird a unique look.
  • Arrange your colorful birds in a frame, on cardstock, or along a wall. They look best grouped together like a rainbow flock frozen mid-song.
