Materials

  • 4–6 white basket-style coffee filters (size 8–12 cup)
  • 1 wooden clothespin (standard 3.25-inch)
  • 10 inches of twine or jute string
  • Fine glitter (white, silver, or pastel)
  • 1 small craft gem or round bead (¼ inch)
  • Clear-drying glue or Mod Podge (2 tablespoons)
  • 1 small paintbrush

Instructions

  • Flatten each coffee filter and smooth out any creases. Then fold it back and forth in narrow accordion-style pleats, about ½ inch wide, until the entire filter is folded.
  • Take two folded filters including one for the upper wings and a slightly smaller one for the lower wings and layer them together so they form a wide X shape.
  • Clip the center with the wooden clothespin, making sure both sets of wings spread evenly on each side. This forms the butterfly’s body.
  • Brush a thin layer of glue along the edges and lightly sprinkle glitter over it. Next, shake off the excess and let it dry for about 10–15 minutes.
  • Tie the twine around the top of the clothespin to create antennae. Add a tiny dab of glue to secure the knot, then press a bead or gem at the top for a sparkling accent.
  • Gently fan out the wings and shape them until you’re happy with the look. You can hang them with invisible thread, clip them to gifts, or scatter them across a table for a charming handmade touch.
