Materials Needed

• 12–15 assorted buttons (sizes 0.5”–1.5” diameter)
• Strong thread, embroidery floss, or thin cord (about 18” long)
• Sewing needle (large eye for thick cord)
• Scissors
• Optional: Small felt circle (1” diameter) for top/bottom reinforcement

Step-by-step Guide

Step 1: Select a variety of buttons, mixing sizes and colors for contrast.

Step 2: Thread your needle with about 18” of cord or floss and knot one end securely.

Step 3: Begin stringing the buttons by passing the needle through their holes. Alternate large and small buttons to keep the strand balanced.

Step 4: Continue until the strand is around 7-8” long, just right for most books.

Step 5: Knot the thread tightly at the end. Optionally, sew a felt circle to both ends for a neat finish.

Step 6: Place it inside your book, letting the colorful button trail peek out charmingly.
