Let me tell you, making yarn snowmen is one of the most enjoyable and creative winter projects I've ever done!
These charming little snowmen are not only budget-friendly but also add a cozy, handmade touch to your holiday decor.
Whether you’re a seasoned crafter or just want a fun weekend project, this guide will take you through every step.
Here’s a list of everything you’ll need:
You’ll need one large balloon for the body and one smaller one for the head.
I recommend blowing them up to sizes that resemble a snowman, think one larger ball and one slightly smaller.
Now you mix 1 cup of glue with ½ cup of water in a bowl. The consistency should be runny but still sticky enough to coat the yarn. If you’re making more than one snowman, you can double the mixture.
Then you cut long pieces of white yarn, around 5-6 feet each, and dip them into the glue mixture.
Start wrapping the yarn around the balloons in random directions. Just make sure you leave small gaps for that “snowy” effect.
Set the wrapped balloons aside to dry completely. This can take up to 24-48 hours, so be patient! I recommend placing them on parchment paper to avoid sticking.
Once the yarn is stiff and fully dried, grab a pin and pop the balloons. Then, you gently remove the deflated balloon from inside the yarn sphere.
Take your two yarn spheres and attach the smaller one on top of the larger one. You can use hot glue to secure them or even thread a bit of yarn through the openings to tie them together.
For the face, you just glue two black buttons or small circles of felt for the eyes and add an orange felt triangle for the nose. Then, you can use black felt or a marker to make a cheerful smile.
For the body, you glue a few buttons down the front for that classic snowman look, then wrap a mini scarf or ribbon around the neck.
Now, you place your snowmen on a windowsill, a mantelpiece, or even as a centerpiece on your holiday table. You can also make smaller versions for tree ornaments, just use smaller balloons.
