Think of Eric Carle’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar, this craft feels like it stepped right out of those pages.

Each pom-pom becomes a little segment of the caterpillar’s body, and when you glue them in a row, they transform into a fuzzy creature ready to nibble on its leaf.

Add a pair of googly eyes, and suddenly your caterpillar has a personality of its own.

Materials Needed

• Colored pom-poms (small to medium size, mix of bright shades)
• Green craft paper or cardstock
• 2 Googly eyes per caterpillar
• Glue (tacky glue or hot glue)
• Scissors and a marker

Step-by-step Guide

Step 1: Cut out leaf shapes from green paper. Then add veins with a green marker to give them texture and character. Punch a few small bite holes for a playful effect.

Step 2: Choose 3-5 pom-poms in your favorite colors and line them up in a row on the leaf.

Step 3: Glue them down one by one, starting with the head pom-pom at the front.

Step 4: Attach two googly eyes to the head pom-pom. You can also cut tiny felt pieces for antennae if you want extra detail.

Step 5: Let the glue dry and watch your caterpillar come to life!

Tips:

If you’re doing this with kids, try making a whole family of caterpillars with different colors.

They look wonderful displayed on a bulletin board, stuck to the fridge, or even strung together as a playful garland.
